CRIME PREVENTION
The Dover Police Department has officers who are specially trained to instruct citizens on how to protect themselves against crime. The key to the protection against crime is the free flow of information between the citizens and the police. As part of this Chief Harold Valentine has created the Law Enforcement Alert Program or LEAP. This program is free of charge and provides information to the public through the use of a computerized email system. The department has also obtained voice mail and email for all of its officers.
The following are programs were established to protect our citizens from the criminal element which preys on them.
The New Jersey Department of Corrections has implemented an INMATE / OFFENDER SEARCH DIRECTORY using this system you can search and see photos of subjects currently in Prison.

The criminal element attempting to prey on our citizens but, not change their lives to the point they are living in a prison. Knowing how to protect your home is one of the most important aspect of the crime prevention education.
Home and Business Surveys are a detailed on site examination of your home and / or business to determine the weaknesses which a criminal will prey upon to gain entry to your home or business. Call us today and a specially trained officer will make an appointment to meet with you at your convenience and discuss with you the actions you can take to protect your home and family from crime.
With a cooperative effort between the public and the police we can all help to make Dover a safer place for us all to work and live.

NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH
The Town of Dover Police Department is always looking to assist citizens in the implementation of a Neighborhood Crime Watch.
Crime Watch is not a group of vigilantes. Crime Watch is a group of civic minded citizens with only one purpose in mind. To STOP CRIME from striking in there neighborhood. Neighborhood watch is about being a GOOD neighbor and being attentive to what is happening in your neighborhood.
Many times just in the Town of Dover, Police Officers have responded to a home where a crime had taken place and heard neighbors saying "Oh !! I heard glass breaking about an hour ago but I didn't want to call for nothing" or " I saw a strange man in my neighbors house while they were away but, I thought he was watching it for them"
This is the type of thinking the criminal counts on. On the other hand it is the type of thinking we all must stop. The police and the public have to work together to make an impact on CRIME.
Most burglaries are committed by young amateur criminals and are committed during the day light hours.
A burglar favorite is to ring the door bell in the front of your home and wait a few minutes to see if someone will answer, if not then walk around the back of your home looking for an easy way in to your house. An open window, a key left under a plant, or just a door left open. Most burglaries do not involve forced entry.
Some things to WATCH for are:
Strange people in your neighbors yard and around a neighbors house
People trying to look in windows
Property being removed from your neighbors house.
Any an all broken windows
Slow driving vehicles
Think how badly you would feel if you were right and did not
